Why We Start Our Day with Creatine & Hydration Salts

As you can imagine, my days go by pretty fast—coaching clients, answering emails, fixing broken gear, and taking care of Rose. That means I don’t always drink enough water, eat enough food, or stay on top of my personal health the way I should. So, to hedge my bets, every morning before coffee, Andrea makes me start the day with creatine and hydration salts. We’ve been doing this for a while now, and honestly, I don’t see us stopping anytime soon. It’s such a simple habit—it takes about 35 seconds—but it makes a huge difference in how I feel, train, and recover.

Why Hydration First Thing in the Morning?

We first got into this after hearing Dr. Andrew Huberman talk about the benefits of rehydrating first thing in the morning. When you wake up, your body is already in a state of mild dehydration. Think about it—you just went 6-8 hours without water, plus you lose fluids through breathing and sweating overnight. Just drinking plain water in the morning isn’t always enough to fully rehydrate your cells and get your brain and muscles firing properly.

Adding electrolytes—sodium, magnesium, and potassium—helps replenish what your body actually needs. This supports:
Brain function – Improved focus, memory, and reaction time
Energy levels – Less sluggishness and fewer mid-day crashes
Muscle function – Better endurance, less cramping, and quicker recovery

Dehydration—even at just 2% fluid loss—can impair cognitive performance, mood, and reaction time (National Council on Aging). Since implementing this habit, we’ve noticed we feel more alert, less sluggish, and more ready to train just from doing this alone.

Why Add Creatine?

Most people think of creatine as just a muscle-building supplement, but it’s actually one of the most well-researched and effective supplements for both the body and brain.

Creatine helps with:
Strength & power output – More endurance in the gym, better recovery between sets
Cognitive function – Improved focus, memory, and even mood
Cellular hydration – Helps muscles retain water, reducing fatigue and improving performance

Dr. Andrew Huberman also discusses creatine’s neuroprotective benefits, especially for brain function and cognitive performance. Studies have shown that creatine can help with mental clarity, stress resilience, and even reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
