For many people, starting CrossFit can be very intimidating to the point where they never even take the first step of walking into that CrossFit gym. The truth is, CrossFit offers a unique approach to fitness that is suitable for EVERYONE - whether you are a seasoned, elite athlete or someone who has never worked out a day in their life. If you are one of those people that is hesitating to start, this quick guide with helpful tips will hopefully make you feel more confident and determined!

What is CrossFit?

By its simple definition, CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements, performed at high intensity. It is a fitness program that combines elements of weightlifting, cardio, gymnastics, and functional movements with the purpose of improving overall fitness and health for all that participate. Everyday, the workouts are varied, which brings excitement and interest to every class and ensures that you’re constantly challenging your body in new and different ways.

One major advantage of CrossFit compared to other fitness programs is its ability to be scalable. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced athlete, each workout can be adjusted to suit your specific fitness level without compromising the stimulus or intent of the workout.

So Why CrossFit?

  1. Community: One important benefit of CrossFit is its community aspect that allows you and everyone to push each other. It’s a great way to meet other individuals with similar goals as yourself, to improve your health and fitness.
  2. Variety: CrossFit workouts are different each day, which keeps you engaged and targeting different muscle groups and skills.
  3. Functional: Many of the movements in CrossFit resemble real-life actions that everyone must be able to accomplish in order to live a sustainment life. For example, the deadlift resembles picking up your groceries from the floor. The strict press resembles putting your canned goods up in your kitchen cabinets.

Helpful Hints for Beginners

  1. Start Slow: Pace yourself in the beginning and really take the time to work on your form with each movement. Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions to your coach in class. They are there to help!
  2. Listen to Your Body: Take rest days when needed and don’t be afraid or embarrassed to scale workouts to match your current fitness level.
  3. Consistency: The best results come from staying consistent. Aim to attend classes regularly. Talk to your coaches to get their recommendations and to answer any of your questions.

Hopefully this quick guide makes you feel more confident in giving CrossFit a try. Hope to see you in the gym!
