What are they doing over there? Who are those kids

That, my friends, is Train for Transformation (T4T). We are transforming lives through fitness, mentorship, and mindset.

Train for Transformation was launched in June 2023 as a 12-week pilot program in collaboration with the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center. The goal was to provide a positive intervention for youth in the Juvenile Detention Center and Shelter Care facilities. Immediately, we could sense the impact and potential this program could deliver. We got affirmation of that early on. Just eight weeks into the pilot, the Executive Director of the JDC, Johnitha McNair, told us about the adjustments they could make in their daily schedule because of a reduction in fights and displays of leadership among the T4T cohort. She agreed to extend the program and entered into a one-year contract for us to provide three classes a week. Since then, T4T has flourished. We have held over 160 classes, served more than 100 athletes, and hosted JDC/SC and court services staff. We have witnessed firsthand the results of using fitness and the CrossFit methodology as a vehicle for providing mentorship and introducing mindset tools.

The population we serve consists of kids “under supervision.” That means kids who are incarcerated at the Juvenile Detention Center or housed at Shelter Care. All of them are court-involved at some level. Train for Transformation is primarily dedicated to serving court-involved youth who need diversion intervention. These young individuals face challenges and difficulties that are sadly all too common. Our program provides them with the tools and support to help them navigate life’s challenges and assure them they are not alone or diminished. As adults with many life experiences, we know adversity builds resilience. So, we combine physical fitness with creative play, team building, journaling, breathwork, and mindset exercises to create a holistic approach to their development. Trident is a sanctuary from external noise and a laboratory to discover how to become physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger. And it works!

The impact of T4T is both profound and multifaceted. The program has catalyzed significant positive behavioral changes among its participants, instilling a sense of hope and optimism. For example, the reduction in conflicts within the JDC was so marked that the center could consolidate three separate lunchtimes into one, fostering community and solidarity among the youth. Additionally, improvements in mood and motivation have been evident, underscoring the program's effectiveness in nurturing physical and emotional well-being.

How can you contribute to this transformative journey? Your involvement is crucial to our success.

Join us in a class! Guest athletes are always welcome. Talk to Chriss or Chris, and let us know if you want to jump in. If you participate more regularly, we can discuss how the class works and some protocols we have learned through Between the Ears training and the Trauma-Informed Coach training we have done.

We welcome everyone to come and join a workout session. Our class times are Wednesday and Friday at 4:45 PM and Saturday at 12:30 PM. Your presence can make a difference, whether you want to participate or just observe. You are an integral part of our community.
